Fly Fishing in Northwest PA

Known for its peacefulness and tranquility along with its trout rich streams and rivers, fly fishing in northwest PA is one of the best destinations in the states. Unlimited fishing opportunities can be found throughout the state of Pennsylvania and the northwestern region of the state is no exception. Offering miles of cold, cool and warm water fishing along with many varieties of fish, many types of fishing, including fly fishing, may be enjoyed almost year round. Although fishing in general is popular recreational activity in this area, fly fishing in northwest PA, in particular, has begun to grow in popularity as well.

Many of the Lake Erie tributaries offer excellent opportunities for fly fishing so there are many areas in northwest Pennsylvania that are suitable for fly fishing. Although there are several outstanding streams for fly fishing in the region, with its abundance of trout, one of the foremost trout streams in the state is Oil Creek. The almost 14 mile section of Oil Creek that offers the best fly fishing opportunities begins at the mouth of Pine Creek and ends at the Allegheny River. This section of Oil Creek runs through Oil Creek State Park, and should be fairly easy to access. Other areas of interest for fly fishing include the West Branch of Caldwell Creek, Little Sandy Creek, Cool Springs Creek and Elk Creek to name a few.

Before grabbing your rod, reel and tackle and heading to the closest stream or river, there are a few things that you will want to know. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission determines the laws and regulations that govern fishing in the state. Some areas may have different laws and regulations than others, so you will want to be sure you know what regulations pertain to the area in which you will be fishing. For example, a section of Oil Creek has two Delayed Harvest-Artificial Lure Only regulations. Other considerations include: 1. minimum catch size, 2. catch limit, 3. fishing hours, 4. fishing dates, 5.types of tackle allowed. Fly fishing northwest Pennsylvania could mean quite a hike into the river or stream in which you want to fish so be sure to plan accordingly for those fishing spots off the beaten path. Many of the tributaries in northwestern Pennsylvania are stocked once or twice annually though there are opportunities to catch both stock and wild fish.

Fly fishing in northwest PA can be enjoyed practically year round. However, weather conditions do vary with season and will affect both clothing and tackle needed for a successful and enjoyable trip. Due to the proximity to Lake Erie, beginning in November and continuing through winter, the climate is cloudy and cold. Spring is generally rainy until May, when temperatures become mild and sunshine is abundant. Summer and fall both offer pleasant weather for fly fishing with mild temperatures and ample sun.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, fly fishing in northwest PA offers an exciting and rewarding fishing destination.
