Michelle Bery posts:

Fly fishing - a sport of significant skill - continues to grow in popularity as the fundamentals of it are passed on from generation to generation and from fisherman to fisherman. As a new generation takes to the water, they learn as the anglers before them, that proper fly fishing equipment ranks as high in importance as technical skill and artful flair. Superior equipment can take the experience of fly fishing and elevate it to the next level - making not only a more successful event - but a more enjoyable one as well.

First and foremost, aside from quality rods, reels, and lines, the most important piece of fly fishing equipment is the fly itself - the very thing for which the sport is named. While some skilled and experienced anglers prefer to make their own flies - constructing artificial flies from a variety of materials - others prefer to purchase their flies. Fly varieties are extensive and each one is designed to attract a particular type of fish. So purchasing flies depends solely on the fish you are targeting during your fly fishing experience.

There are many anglers who will tell you that their tackle box is their most prized piece of fly fishing equipment. After the purchase of some meticulously chosen flies, it is important - and necessary - to keep them organized and always on hand in order to ensure a successful experience.

But when it comes to fly fishing equipment, it is imperative to not forget the fisherman. Proper fly fishing apparel is just as important as any other piece of equipment. Let us not forget that fly fishermen stand often waist high in water; proper gear - such as wading boots, fingerless and full gloves, and waterproof pants and jackets - can protect the skin and keep wearers dry and comfortable throughout their day.

Fly fishing is a learned skill and art form that those who practice it take very seriously indeed. It stands to reason, therefore, that fly fishing equipment is incredibly important to such enthusiasts. And once you understand the sport it is not difficult to see why. The proper fly fishing equipment can literally mean the difference between an uncomfortable and unsuccessful experience -and one that yields enjoyment and success.

Create a video blog

Paul Winter posts:

Canada is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. The magnificent mountains and the running streams make for a picture perfect scene. The cool running water houses some of the best fish that most anglers can not wait to get their hands on. The fishing is great and the types of fish include salmon, shellfish, tuna, mackerel, halibut and redfish. Most of these fish are treasures that many anglers would dearly love to serve up to their family and friends.

Canadian fly fishing equipment is the most important tool in the fishing trip. When purchasing equipment you must ensure that it is a comfortable fit for you. For example, when choosing a fly fishing rod you want to keep in mind your size and height. If you are short a 7-foot rod may not work well for you. Rods should be specified for fly-fishing and accommodate your height.

Another important aspect in Canadian fly fishing equipment is the choice of artificial flies or nymphs. Either method works effectively, but most anglers have their personal preference. What works well for one may not do another any good. Many fishermen will have both and mix the two methods with great success. The artificial fly for bait sits just on the surface of the water. This method works well because to the fish it looks like a delicious meal. The nymph method looks like eggs just below the surface waiting for the dinner bell.

Canadian fly fishing equipment should also include life vests. It is dangerous to be in any water without safety. Accidents happen and a life jacket can save your life. The water in Canada is very cold so every precaution should be taken to ensure the entire families safety. Many of the boating companies or outfitters will furnish life vests for those that do not have their own.

As for other types of baits for Canadian fly fishing equipment one can choose grubs, jigs or plastic worms. Grubs work best for larger fish, they are easy to see and the fish like to bite. The grubs can be used in clear water for wonderful results. Jigs on the other hand work best in water that is not that clean and has low visibility. Plastic worms are also the choice of many when fishing in Canada. The big fish tend to like the plastic worms, as they look so real. If you are looking for that trophy catches try using the plastic worm to get the big bite!

Caffeinated Content

Robert Feuring posts:

Searching for the right fishing rods for your needs can probably seem overwhelming at times. There are tons of elements you have to consider and lots of options on the market which can make narrowing down your choices seem impossible. Plus, the market is densely packed with competition. How are you going to even decide which possible models to look at more closely?

When it comes to fishing rods, one way to narrow the field is by focusing on certain manufacturers. One of the best names in fishing rods happens to be Shimano. Let's look at some of the reasons why they are such a force to be reckoned with in the world of fishing.

History of Shimano

The Shimano Corporation was first founded back in 1921 in Sakai - a city located in the Osaka area of Japan. They have a long history of excellence and, in fact, in most of the world their name is the first one on the lips of fishers who are interested in the highest quality equipment possible. It makes sense that a company from Japan - a country known for doing a lot of fishing - would be the ones to create some of the best fishing rods on the market.

Of course, fishing rods are only part of what they do. The largest part of their business is in cycling where they are known for outstanding innovations that have led to some of the best cycles on the market and have earned them a reputation unparalleled by anyone else in the field. That's because the company's main focus has always been on precision engineering - a must for cycling and for creating the best fishing equipment possible.

Fishing Rods & Shimano

With their success over the last eight decades, Shimano has managed to expand by leaps and bounds. Today, they have headquarters around the world. In fact, it's their Irvine, California headquarters which is responsible for most of the work on the fishing equipment. They currently employ more than 75 people who are dedicated to doing nothing except creating improvements to the current line of exceptional fishing rods. As a result they have produced some impressive technology, including High Efficiency Gearing.

Shimano Success in Fishing Rods

Don't be surprised if Shimano isn't a manufacturer you've come to know for fishing rods because the North American market actually represents only about one-fifth of their entire market in this industry. However, over 40% of their sales come from Europe, and they dominate the Asian markets, including China and Singapore, with their top-of-the-line fishing rods and other products.

Of course, the proof is in the money. In 2005, Shimano earned $1.4 billion in sales. About one-fourth of that total came from the sale of their fishing rods. Those numbers are steadily increasing as more of the world begins to embrace Shimano as the only name in fishing rods.

Purchasing Shimano Fishing Rods

If you have a hard time finding Shimano fishing rods, look for an online dealer, such as Sea Isle Tackle. They have a good supply of their equipment.

Website content

Trevor Price posts:

Trying to plan an Alaska fly fishing trip? Wondering which lodge to book? Trying to decide when to go? Figuring out what to pack? For the answers to these questions and more, read on to learn how to plan a fantastic Alaskan fly fishing trip.

Obtaining a Fishing License

Typically, your charter company or lodge will arrange your license for you. However if not or if you're planning a self-catered and independent fishing trip, you can order your license online from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Right from their website, you can apply for your fishing license and print it out instantly.

When to Go

The best time to go on your Alaska fly fishing trip is during the summer months, between June and September. However, the specific season for your trip may depend on the type of fish you're after. For example, the Rainbow Trout are biggest from June to August while the Graylings start jumping in May.

Again, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game offers a basic fish run timing chart or you can contact them by phone for more up-to-date and specific fish run information.

Fishing licenses, for a non-state-resident, are $20 for day one, two days goes for $35, $55 for the week, $80 for two weeks and $145 for an entire year. Military personnel can obtain a one-year license for as little as $24 a year, with proof of enlistment.

Setting Up Your Charter or Lodge

If you're going to Alaska to fish, you should book at a fishing lodge or with an experienced fishing tour company. Areas like Bristol Bay and the Kenai River have hundreds of lodges from which to choose, but being in the wrong place at the wrong time means you could really miss out. The bulk of Alaska's fish population is migratory, meaning you need to be where the fish are. That said, if you don't book ahead, you could find the right place and time fully booked up.

So, how do you know where the fish are or where they'll be? Frommer's travel guide, a respected and international travel guide company, recommends making your reservations through a local travel or fishing tour company. They endorse Sport Fishing Alaska specifically - available by phone at 1-888-552-8674.

The company is unique as they are an advocate for the angler, helping you book your Alaska fly fishing trip based on where the fishing is good, plentiful and timely. They'll also work within any budget and for a small advance fee of just $95.

A fishing expedition in Alaska is one of the most thrilling adventures a true angler will ever experience. Because for many it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you sure don't want to lose time spent on planning the trip after you've already arrived at your destination. Taking advantage of some of the services mentioned above will help to ensure you are able make best use of your precious time on the water.

Caffeinated Content

Steve W Sharpe posts:

The term “fly fishing gear” can be used to refer to a lot of parts of your fly fishing supplies. In this article, we’ll discuss various piece of fly fishing gear that are important to have on hand. You already know you need a rod and reel, but there’s so much more involved in your fly fishing gear.

Of course, you’ll need to have a variety of flies to use as bait for the fish. Flies are meant to mimic the look and movement of a fish’s natural food source. Some fish prefer different flies, and when you use what they are used to eating, your chances are better of landing a bite. Keep several different types of flies close at hand so you can choose the right fly for the specific fish you are angling for.

You will also need to have several different weights of lines so you can switch them out if you find yourself in waters with larger fish. Of course, your fly rod has a lot to do with what line to use, but if you have an 8 nwt rod and are finding some 10 pound fish, go ahead and switch to a 10 nwt line to increase your chances of winning a fight with that prize-winning trout.

Part of your fly fishing gear includes what you wear while fishing. You’ll need to have a good pair of waders so you can keep dry while going after your fish. Pick a pair of waders that will meet your fishing situation. Chest high waders are usually a good choice because they allow you to wade in all depths of water.

You will also need a fishing vest with lots of pockets that will hold your flies, line, and other pieces of gear. The pockets should fasten with Velcro so that you have easy access to what you need. You don’t want to be on the water and realize you need a different fly only to miss out on a passing school of fish because you were fumbling with your pockets.

A good pair of fishing pliers is almost a necessity. Many rivers and streams are exclusively catch and release water. That means that once you catch the fish, you need to let it go. This helps propagate the population and promote healthy fishing at all times. You will want an easy way to get the hook out of the fish’s mouth without causing harm to its body. Fishing pliers are designed to do just that.

Finally, your fly fishing gear should include a waterproof camera. If you are lucky enough to land a whopper, you’ll want to document it as part of your prize!

When you are amassing your fly fishing gear, things can eventually get out of hand. Many fly fishermen have an abundance of gear with the possibility that they might need something specific in a certain situation. That’s just fine, but the essentials that are listed above are a start!

Website content

Paul Winter posts:

Fishing is considered a favorite past time among Americans. A majority of Americans have had the ultimate fishing experience. Fishing is the activity of catching species that live and breathe underwater.

Today more advanced fishing techniques were developed to make the activity more exciting and challenging. Before 2005, all fishermen had to do was hit a macro to catch a fish. Today there is a more developed fishing system; it involves fighting a fish to reel it in.

A simple fishing guide would make understanding fishing easier. There are five steps to follow for beginners. Start out by preparing your rod and reel. The reel has to have a line then press the button of your spin-cast reel. Make sure that enough line is pulled to thread it through all of the guides of the rod.

In the second step of the fishing guide it is important to attach a hook. One thing about hooks is that they come in different shapes and sizes. An acceptable size to use is #6 or #8. A clinch should be used to tie the hook to the line.

The third step of the fishing guide involves attaching a bobber by threading the line to the top and bottom hooks. The purpose is to attach the bobber so the fish hook hangs just above the structure.

Attaching the bait is the next step. Attach the bait to the hook using either worm rig method, worm rig for bait stealers method or doughball method.

The final step in the fishing process is to cast and retrieve. First cast the bait, then turn the reel crank forward until it clicks to prevent more line from coming out. You know you are catching a fish when the bobber moves or when you feel a tug on the line. Make sure the hook is in the fish's mouth. If more detailed instructions are needed there are numerous fishing guides on the web or in books.

One guideline is very important before going fishing. Check the fishing regulations to see if the fish you catch according to size is legal to keep. If it is a fish that is not legal to keep, it must be released and handled as little as possible.

If this is a fish that can be kept a good way to keep it alive is to place it in a cooler until it is ready to be cleaned. So if your purpose is fish as hobby and use the catch and release method, fishing regulations do not need to be considered. Fishing is mostly done for recreational purposes, such as fishing tournaments or hobby but some actually catch fish that they plan to cook with. Whatever the reason your reason for fishing is it blends well with the American way of life. Remember to take along your fishing guide!

Caffeinated Content

Ian Koch posts:

My friend Bob is always looking for the next great adventure. Recently he took a trip up to Alaska and spent a week at a fishing camp. When he returned he seemed almost disappointed to be home. It turns out that he had the best vacation of his life and had enough stories about the "one that got away" to last a lifetime. No sooner was he back then he was talking about planning his next getaway to the northern state.

Alaska is well known not only in America but all over the world for it's fantastic landscape, beautiful scenery and it's great hunting and fishing opportunities. Every year hunters from Japan, England, Germany Scandinavia and a lot of other countries are heading toward Alaska for fishing and hunting adventures or just for great outdoor experiences.

Bob spent a week at a fishing lodge up in Alaska. It was hard to tell if he enjoyed the comforts of the lodge in the evening or the amazing saltwater and ice fishing he did during the day. You see, the cold, deep oceans that surround that region make it one of he best fishing spots in the world. Bob told me that on any given day he would catch at least a dozen fish that were worth bringing back. Of course, he did just that much to his wife's chagrin when he packed about two dozen of them in dry ice and had it send back home via overnight courier. Keeping the fish as fresh as possible is the big challenge for every fisherman. Fortunately Alaska has a well built apparatus of courier services due to requirements from the thousands of sport fishermen that need their catch brought home in a fresh condition.

Spending a week with fellow fishing enthusiasts from around the world he learned some of the tricks of the trade that he says he can't wait to get out on the water and try locally. Of course, no fishing getaway adventure would be complete without tales of the "big one that got away" and as his friends and co-workers can attest he has been filling them in on the stories on a daily basis.

An avid fisherman myself I am going to take Bob up on his advice and next summer will join him for a getaway to see how many tall tales I can come back with - and who knows, maybe I'll catch a fish or two.

Website content

Bob Bastian posts:

All across the United States there are many beautiful, exciting places that are excellent or fly fishing. The following article just highlights a few of them.

Sitka, Alaska is a major stopover for salmon heading to British Columbia, Washington, and other Alaskan waters. Fly fishermen at Sitka, have a higher fishing catch rate than any other marine area in Southeast Alaska. June is the best month for fishing this area.

The Colorado River at Lees Ferry, Arizona, is one of the best fly fishing spots for rainbow trout. The fish are comfortable all year round in a 15-mile stretch of cold water that flows from the depths of Lake Powell between Glen Canyon Dam and the upper end of the Grand Canyon. Fly fishermen can also book a guide and go flats fishing for 25 pound carp.

Saltwater fly fishing is at its best at Montauk Point, New York. Montauk Point is the easternmost point of Long Island and is best known for striper fishing. Fly fishermen have miles of beautiful shoreline in which they can cast their fly.

Gunpowder Falls, Maryland, is an excellent place to catch cold water trout. A deal was struck by the Maryland state authorities and Trout Unlimited to start cold water releases from Pretty Boy Dam. This has resulted in a combination of wild and stocked brown, brook, and rainbow trout. Most of it is in Gunpowder Falls State Park.

Fishing Creek, Pennsylvania, is one of the states top wild trout streams. It generally stays cool throughout the summer. There is a five-mile stretch called the Narrows, near Lamar, that is a very popular area for fly fishing.

Driftless Area, Wisconsin, has many excellent fly fishing streams loaded with brown trout. There is excellent access to all of southwestern Wisconsin's eight counties. There are 68 streams in Vernon County alone, including Kickapoo River and Timber Coulee Creek. Most fly fishermen in this area use mayfly and caddies imitations.

Laguna Madre, Texas, is full of rivers and lakes that are excellent locations. Texas also has its southern coast, which is among the world's greatest saltwater fly fishing areas. The saltwater flats of Laguna Madre, next to Padre Island, are full of all different kinds of fish that make for a great experience.

Henry's Fork, Idaho, is a great destination for rainbow trout. If you are fishing the Island Park area, it is better to fish in runoff conditions.

Lake C. W. McConaughy, Nebraska, is the largest lake in the state and also has some of the best fly fishing. Another excellent spot in Nebraska is the Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area, which is a series of twenty sandpit lakes that have been carved into the Platte River basin. Red Willow reservoir is also a favorite of fly fishermen in this area of the country.

Kauai, Hawaii, is a great spot for fly fishing largemouth, smallmouth, and peacock bass. This Garden Isle also has excellent saltwater fly fishing.

Whether you like fresh or salt water fly fishing, there are thousands of places to fish across the country that offer the fly fisherman endless opportunities and experiences.

Caffeinated Content
